Founded in 2019 on the initiative of ADA University’s law faculty, ADA Law Society is where students take the law beyond the syllabus — arguing it in debate and moot court, questioning it with practitioners and scholars, and writing it for the Law Blog.

ADA Law Society (ALS) is a student organisation established in September 2019 on the initiative of ADA University’s law faculty. The Society organises events with the purpose of extending students’ knowledge and contributing to their student life at the same time. By attending the events of the Society, students get a chance to hear from distinguished local and foreign lawyers and law professors their experience and knowledge in certain fields of law. The Society’s events are open not only to law students but to students of other majors as well. The scope of the Society’s activities includes, but is not limited to, lectures, talks, legal discussions, academic excursions and moot court competitions.

Moot courts
Simulated proceedings argued under the forms of a real court, from written memorials to oral submissions before a bench — including the Society’s own Caspian International Law Moot Court on the international law of the sea.

Seminars and lectures
Distinguished local and foreign lawyers, researchers and law professors are invited to put a single problem in front of students, and to answer for it afterwards.

The Law Blog
A legal publication with an editorial board, a submission policy and a weekly release — publishing in English and Azerbaijani.

Discussions and partnerships
Legal discussions, debates, academic excursions and joint events with other student organisations, at ADA and beyond it.
What therecord shows.
2019
The Society is founded
ADA Law Society is established at ADA University in September 2019 on the initiative of the law faculty, with Elgun Ganizada as its founding president, and meets students at its first clubs fair in October. Its first seminars follow in November and December: legal writing and research, intellectual property law with Dr Shubha Ghosh of Syracuse University, and civil law and contract formation.
2020–22
Seminars, in the room and online
The seminars continue. In January 2020 the German lawyer Elvin Jabrayil speaks on legal education and advocacy in Germany; in April 2021 a webinar takes up the challenges of modern social insurance and tax law; and in December 2021 Toghrul Guluzade presents on the commercial aspects of private international law in international sales contracts. In 2022 the Society hosts talks on ethics and compliance programmes and on Armenia’s anti-mine obligations under international law, and in November welcomes Professor W. Cole Durham Jr., a scholar of law and religion, to lecture on multiculturalism and interfaith contributions in a globalising world.
2023
The Civil Code at one hundred
In December, on the initiative of the School of Law and the Society, ADA University hosts a scientific conference on the centenary of Azerbaijan’s first Civil Code.
2024
Debate, and a board with committees
In March the Society hosts Robert Lochhead for a five-day intensive course on American law, and in May it runs its first Debate Tournament for Law Students. In August it introduces a board and three committees for the 2024/2025 term; in October it holds Jurisquizdence with the ADA Intellectual Games Club; and in December it closes the year with the final of another American Parliamentary Debate Tournament and a “What is Law?” art competition held with the ADA Art Club.
2025
The Law Blog, and a year recognised
The Blog Committee holds its first information session in February and the earliest article in the archive appears in April. Law professors debate artificial intelligence at the Society’s invitation in March; in May ADA Law School recognises the ALS team for its year; in June and July the Society and the ADA Debate Society run the III Parliamentary Debate Tournament, whose final is held on 7 July; and in December the IV Parliamentary Debate Tournament reaches its final.
2026
A competition of its own
In May the Society holds seminars on sea-level rise and statehood and on international trade contracts; in July the first Caspian International Law Moot Court, a competition organised by the Society itself, reaches its final.
ADA University, Baku.
The Society is a student organisation of the School of Law at ADA University. The School was established in 2022 on the basis of the University’s Law Program, and offers the LL.B. and the LL.M.; final-year students specialise in Law and Government, Law and Business, or Law and Technology. The Society is open to students of every faculty.
